Indian Cucumber Root (Medeola virginiana). This is the first of two layers of whorled leaves. The diameter of this whorl is about 3 inches.

These plants are widespread in our woods.

The second layer of whorled leaves is about to unfurl. This plant is about a foot tall.

Photograph from May 17.

Both whorls and a flower bud are visible here.

Photograph from May 17.

The bud is beginning to open. See next photo for a close up of the flower.
