From a 16mm home movie I have, of a Steeler game in 1940 (I'm pretty sure that it was the game against the Washington Redskins), a few frames showing the HB taking the snap, handing off to the fullback and the fullback following blockers through the line.

It is interesting, that the QB was not taking the snap on the plays that I have on film, but rather was used as a blocking back.
The Halfback not only took the snap, but was also the teams leading passer.

The team roster, from a program from an earlier game that season is shown below:

The starting lineup is shown below:

Again from the home movie, a sequence of images showing the above formation.  You will see that the QB is NOT lined up behind the center, but rather between the guard and tackle.  Basically the whole backfield is shifted to the right so that the left halfback is behind center.

Another view from the movie, of the halfback, Patterson throwing a pass.

The league leaders, after 2 games into the season are shown below.
Notice that Patterson, the Steeler's halfback, was among the passing leaders and running leaders.

I also have a program from the 1934 season.  This program is interesting because in 1934,
the Steelers were actually called the Pittsburgh Pirates, like the baseball team.

The cover of the program is shown below.

Also interesting in this program, is that inside, the Official Rules of the NFL are listed.
See below:

And FINALLY, a picture of ME, getting ready to attend what I THINK is my first Steeler game, against the Redskins in 1946..
