May 12 I thought I'd check down down the road close to the pond where I am usually too late to catch the Red Trilium (Trillium erectum)
in bloom. Not this year! There were probably about 20 plants - most of
them in bloom. They stand about 10 to 16 inches with beautiful leaves.
Trilliums
are true to their names: all plant parts are in threes. My Peterson's
guide states that the flowers are ill-scented; I didn't check to see if
that was true. | |
The leaves are much larger and fatter than the more common (for me) painted trillium, which should also be blooming now.

It was mid-day and the sun provided for some nice shadows.
