I thought I'd check down down the road close to the pond where I am usually too late to catch the Red Trilium (Trillium erectum) in bloom. Not this year! There were probably about 20 plants - most of them in bloom. They stand about 10 to 16 inches with beautiful leaves.

Trilliums are true to their names: all plant parts are in threes. My Peterson's guide states that the flowers are ill-scented; I didn't check to see if that was true.
The leaves are much larger and fatter than the more common (for me) painted trillium, which should also be blooming now.

It was mid-day and the sun provided for some nice shadows.

A group of three, of course.
